FAQ

This page is here for your convenience and is designed to help you find answers to the questions people most often ask regarding orthodontic care. However, we encourage you to call our office at 303-627-6212 to schedule a free consultation with Dr. Minick so we can answer your questions face-to-face and address your specific needs.

1. What age is best to see the orthodontist for the first time?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic screening at age seven. Age seven is when a child’s first permanent teeth start to come in and when potential orthodontic needs begin to reveal themselves. Screening a child early allows your doctor to provide preventative care that can modify dental and maxillofacial growth in order to reduce or eliminate future developmental problems. Early screening also allows Dr. Minick to time orthodontic care to coordinate with the unique growth patterns of each child.

2. Will braces hurt?

You may have heard about or experienced traditional “old style” braces that required uncomfortable orthodontic procedures. Dr. Minick has chosen to use low-friction, self-ligating, light force braces that utilize modern technology to maximize patient comfort. Click here to learn more about low-friction braces.

When using low-friction brackets, having braces does not hurt. It does not hurt to place the braces on the teeth or remove them from the teeth. However, patients can experience minimal discomfort, often described like sore muscles, for approximately two to three days after the braces are placed on the teeth. There may also be some minimal discomfort when wires are changed during follow up appointments, but this is considerably less common.

3. How do I choose between braces and Invisalign?

Invisalign is a great invisible, removable alternative to braces for certain orthodontic treatments for both teens and adults. Invisalign is most commonly used for mild crowding and spacing; although a personalized orthodontic consultation is the only way to determine which treatment option is right for you. Call today to schedule a free consultation with Dr. Minick.

4. Is it important to see your general dentist during orthodontic treatment?

It is very important to continue regular check ups with your general dentist during orthodontic care. Your Orthodontist will monitor and guide the progress of your orthodontic treatment but will not provide general dental care such as cleanings and dental examinations. Please plan to continue regular dental examinations with your family dentist.

5. How long will braces take?

At Minick Orthodontics we pride ourselves in the fact that we tailor orthodontic care to meet each individual’s unique orthodontic needs. Therefore treatment time varies from case to case. However, on average, treatment time using low-friction braces lasts approximately 18-24 months. Treatment time can be shortened significantly by closely following instructions given by Dr. Minick.

6. Does everyone have to wear a retainer after braces?

Yes. Retainers are designed to hold teeth in their beautiful, newly aligned positions. Without this appliance teeth are likely to return to pre-braces positions very quickly. For the first four months after braces are removed, retainers should be worn at all times except for eating, brushing and flossing. After four months, most people can reduce wear to nighttime use only. Bonded, permanent retainers are a great alternative for some patients. At Minick Orthodontics, the first set of retainers is always included in the cost of your orthodontic treatment.

7. What are low-friction braces and what are the advantages?

Low friction, otherwise known as self-ligating braces, are a technologically advanced technique that allows the orthodontist to use light forces to move the teeth rather than heavy forces previously used with old style braces. Old style braces required uncomfortable, unsanitary ties to hold the wire in place on the bracket. Self-ligating, low-friction braces have a clip that holds the wire in place allowing for more control and flexibility, shorter treatment times, and greater comfort. Click here to learn more about the type of low-friction braces used at Minick Orthodontics.

8. What is an expander and when is it used?

One goal of orthodontic treatment is to ensure that the upper and lower teeth fit well together. An expander is an orthodontic appliance that is used to increase the width of the maxilla (upper jaw/pallet), and is used when the upper jaw is constricted or too narrow to fit with the lower jaw. An expander is best used prior to late adolescence while a child is still growing, and when used appropriately can prevent the need for tooth extraction or surgery. Expanders, however, are not for everyone. With the modern technology of low-friction, self-ligating braces, most individuals can achieve a healthy, corrected bite without the use of an expander.

9. What are the most common reasons for orthodontic treatment?

The number one reason people choose to seek orthodontic treatment is to improve their appearance. A beautiful smile can boost confidence and can encourage people to smile more often. Another common reason for braces is to improve dental health by making teeth easier to clean and care for. Straighter, less crowded teeth are easier to access and clean. Bite correction is another common reason for orthodontic care. Many people suffer from cross bites or over / under bites. Braces can correct these issues, improving appearance and comfort and decreasing abnormal wear on the teeth.

10. Does insurance cover orthodontics?

Many dental insurance plans include orthodontic coverage. You will want to check directly with your insurance provider to understand your specific coverage. At Minick Orthodontics we accept most insurances and are a preferred provider on several plans. We will be happy to take the hassle out of insurance by working directly with your insurance provider, making it easier for you to focus on your dental health. 11. Will I be able to get colors?

Yes. Many kids enjoy wearing school colors or favorite colors on their braces. At Minick Orthodontics we use In-Ovation self-ligating braces which allow us to use optional colors without compromising the benefits of low-friction braces.

12. How much do braces cost?

At Minick Orthodontics we tailor orthodontic care to meet the unique needs of each individual patient. Our goal is to ensure that you receive just the care you need without paying extra for unnecessary treatment. Therefore, to provide you with an accurate estimate it is recommended that you meet with Dr. Minick for a free consultation, during which time he can assess your orthodontic needs and determine an estimated cost for your specific care.
